Dashcams: Stolen Jag Takes on Cops with Shredded Tire

On May 29, 2023, Memorial Day, Oak Brook Police in suburban Chicagoland were alerted to a stolen vehicle in the area by automated license plate reader equipment. The Jaguar SUV had recently been taken from an Oswego home. While patrolling the area, officers spotted a vehicle matching the description. An officer approached the vehicle while stopped and placed spike strips under the tires while giving verbal commands to the driver to show his hands and exit the vehicle.

The driver fled instead. Down the road, Lombard Police picked up the pursuit with two units as the suspect drove recklessly at high speeds through the Yorktown Shopping Center before getting back on the main roads and losing a tire.

After a short pursuit on the expressway, Oak Brook officers deployed a Star Chase GPS tracking dart. It seems that between this, the increasing number of units which now included a Sheriff’s Deputy, and the lack of a rear left tire – the driver finally realized his only option was to stop and surrender – which he did moments later on the side of the Winfield exit ramp from I-355.

Officers took the offender into custody and inventoried the vehicle so it could be returned to the owner. While complete details have not yet been released, its apparent that the offender knew the owner, and possibly worked for them.

The offender had apparently taken the keys when the owner was not around and took off in the vehicle without permission. In fact, police reports indicate that he knew he was not allowed to drive the vehicle, which is why it was reported stolen after the owner realized what had happened. The offender was charged with aggravated fleeing & eluding, aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony driving on a revoked license.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
