Dashcam: Armed Robber Flees Trooper, Crashes into Squad

On August 3, 2021, Michigan State Police responded to a call of a man robbing another man and shooting a gun in the air near a business in Buena Vista Township, Michigan. The first trooper in the area spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect, a 54 year-old man, fled after initially yielding to the trooper.

The suspect ran multiple stop signs and stop lights while fleeing at a high rate of speed, until he lost control of the GMC Acadia in an intersection and launched the SUV into a local Buena Vista Township Police Department cruiser. As the cruiser struck the nearby utility pole, transformers blew and wires fell on top of the squad. Sergeant Tim Patterson sustained serious injuries and was extricated with the help of the Fire Department.

At points throughout the incident, officers and troopers can be heard discussing the delay in response from the local Fire Department, with some noting that it was National Night Out. Later in the video, we can hear others state that the equipment was actually on another call and they were trying to get equipment there quickly. One officer can be heard telling the others that the Chief (of the Fire Department?) said to thank Sgt. Patterson, as he seemed to think this would make it easy to convince the decision makers to add another rig to the fleet.

The suspect and Sgt. Patterson were both hospitalized and released, although the suspect was taken into custody and charged with: five counts of third offence felony firearm, armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, and fleeing and eluding.

The troopers and officers in this video rose to the ocassion and their communities should be proud to have them in their midst.

We were unable to find updates to the case and final verdict, but will update this description if/when new information is available.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
